Department history
The basis of the chair of "Philosophy History and Cultural Studies" was laid on the order of the rector of the Azerbaijan State University named after SMKirov Yahya Mammadov on December 4, 1974. The first name of the department was "Scientific Atheism" and was later renamed "The History and Theory of Scientific Atheism". In accordance with the decision of the Scientific Council of the Azerbaijan State University named after S.Kirov on October 31, 1989, the Chair of "Philosophy History, Religion and Atheism Theory" was created. In 1990, this chair was named "History of Philosophy, Religion and Atheism." In connection with the introduction of a course of study at the curriculum, its name was renamed "Philosophy History and Religious Studies". The name of the department was renamed as a result of the removal of the subject of religious studies from the curriculum of the republic and its replacement with its cultural studies course. Since 1997, it was renamed to the Department of Philosophy and Cultural Studies. The chair was transferred to the subdepartment of the faculty since June 1999. Professor Gadim Mustafayev, Professor Mammadali Zeynalov led the department. Currently, the Chair of "Philosophy History and Cultural Studies" is headed by Professor Rabiyat Aslanova.
From 1972 till 1990 a number of prominent scientists and educators have been working at the department. Panah Mahmudov, Musa Mehdiyev, Naila Faradova, Duman Jafarov are among them.
